A 3-week workshop series hand-spinning Oko Farms-grown cotton
This beginner-friendly workshop combines interactive, discussion-based learning with guided, hands-on spinning practice. Together, we’ll engage in a tactile exploration of the cotton plant as we examine its unique qualities, reflect on its layered history and contemporary significance, deepen our understanding of sustainable cultivation, and transform raw fiber into yarn.

By the end of the series:
You’ll be able to confidently spin both 1-ply and 2-ply yarn using Brooklyn-grown cotton.
You’ll also leave with your own hand spindle, and printed instructional materials to support your continued practice and yarn-making journey beyond the farm.

About Oko Farms
Oko Farms (est. 2013) is New York City's only publicly accessible aquaponics farm, educational center, and community hub. Using aquaponics, we sustainably grow fish and plants together in a recirculating ecosystem to save water and grow more food in small, urban spaces.
The word “oko” pays homage to our founder’s Yoruba heritage. Oko is a Yoruba word which loosely translates to farm in English. A more accurate definition of the word is a province or place where agriculture is at the center of socio-economic life, daily activities, and cultural traditions.
